Passage

These final days of fall have shorn the trees
of every leaf they've borne since early spring.
My feathered friends, the wrens and chickadees,
frequent the feeder less, have taken wing.

Slow-moving clouds hang low and shroud the sun;
with ever-present mist the woods are kissed.
Whip-lashes of the wind one can't outrun.
The growing season's spent and shall be missed.

So why does Winter's presence cause such fears?
Because it heralds Death, that passage we
dread most as verdant flora disappears
and Beauty we have loved becomes debris.

But change is part of God's eternal plan.
Enjoy His artistry while you still can.
