When a pair of mantes START to mate
the poor wary male
doesn't know what will be his fate.

Will he be able to stay safe,
and retreat in one piece
or will he end up as bait?

Despite his life is at stake
he will not hesitate;
for strong is the urge to copulate.

In the BEGINNING ever so
cautiously from behind
onto her back he leaps.

To calm the moody miss, he caresses
her head and neck
then he attaches himself to her sex.

He proceeds to pump his seed
hoping that he will survive the deed;
his purpose in life is to breed !

Dude's performance can last for hours
alas, if the female gets restless
she will happily feast on his head.

The female's attack is cold and ruthless
but the hearty meal will provide much
nutrients for her and the NEW generation
that next Spring will hatch.

The offspring will grow and thrive
and, reached maturity after a HOT summer,
in autumn the 9 months OLD mantes
will then date, mate and perpetuate their kind.

PS. Despite the male mantes is headless he will continue to ejaculate .. even more vigorously for hours.

After the mating season in autumn praying mantises die... so if the male does succeed to retreat safely , he is destined to die by the end of the year anyway.

The female once she has laid her eggs also dies ..the offspring is auto-sufficient at birth.

In this video the male approached the female head on and had no chance .. she attacked him even before he jumped on yet as he is being eaten he manages to attached himself and start pumping .. nature is wondrous. Indeed!
