His Remnant

by Janet Foor

T'was on the aisle in the fourth row
where mother always prayed.
Today I chose that very place --
Her memory replayed.

A sadness overwhelmed me as
I knelt in mother's pew.
Our friends and fam'ly are not here
for reasons old and new.

Bells used to ring; a choir sang.
The organist played loud.
Young children made the sweetest sounds
as rev'rently we bowed.

Today most pews are empty and
the worshippers are few.
It's quiet in the choir loft
apart from one or two.

Still there are those who gather here
to worship in His name.
My spirit rose as I recalled --
His 'remnant' He will claim.

We visited my hometown and the church where I grew up a few weeks ago. The church is beautiful and holds many memories of my youth and childhood. I was baptized, confirmed, and married there. Today while it is still beautiful, there are only a few who still worship there. At first, I was sad until I recalled:

Romans 11:5 "So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.

Despite the state of the church, God has once again left a small remnant. A remnant that is far from perfect, but a remnant that trust God. They simply do their best to live for God because they already know they are going to heaven.
