Owed to Terre Haute

by Bill Schott

If you visit Terre Haute
it's best if you go there by boat;
second best is go by plane,
or, if you must, then take a train.

Never travel there by car,
or zoom in on a shooting star;
don't beam down from the Enterprise;
to dig from China isn't wise.

Terre Haute's in Indiana,
so if you're coming from Montana,
take a right around Wisconsin

"'Scuse me. Are you Mr. Johnson?"

"No, Joe Johnson's off today,
helping neighbors bale hay.
I am rhyming poems instead,
which I can do on my head."

"Well, I've a note for Mr. J,
which must reach the man today.
It's from a girlfriend, I would think,
as the envelope is pink."

"Okay, that's fine, I'm sure you're right,
but it's going to cause a fight.
Mrs. J won't be amused;
I picture Mr. Johnson bruised."

"Okay, alright, I'll see him later;
continue as the poemenator."

"Alright, okay, we'll see ya, guy.
Back to rhyming; where was I?"

On a complementary goat
visitors leave Terre Haute;
once they're gone they'll likely not
eat a plastic apricot.

If they do, it doesn't mean
that the cheesy moon is green,
or that lions have no pride,

"Hey, is that a goat you ride?"
