Pressing circumstances; unforeseen consequences
O the Iron-y!
by Elizabeth Emerald
1964
Chuck, 17, lays his pants on the carpet, heats the iron, and presses perfect creases in the legs.
To his dismay, they're covered in cat hair.
Chuck gets another pair of pants, turns them inside out, so that the right side won't get covered in cat hair, and repeats the procedure.
To his dismay, when he turns the pants right side out, the creases are concave.
Chuck rummages in the laundry sack, pulls out pants awaiting washing for three days, scrambles into them, yanks on his sweater, socks, and shoes, and makes a mad dash for the school bus.
