Scene at a Chess Match
by Bill Schott
The scene opens in a public library with a chess table and players situated in the center and an audience forming a half-circle facing downstage. Upstage and on line with the players are Pons and Ned. Ned: Thanks fer invitin' me ta watch this here checkers game wit ya, Cuz. Pons: Sure, Ned. This is actually a chess championship between these two world famous players, Azzo Spikelli and Bluto Barnes. Ned: So one a these dudes wins a chest full a money by winnin' at checkers? Pons: No, Ned. It's not checkers. This game is called chess. The pieces move in a different way than in checkers. Ned: So it's like that card game Fish is awtogetter diff'ernt en Old Maid. Pons: Yeah, like that. Ned: Wonner if there's a Old Maid champ'nship somewheres? Pons: I don't think so, Ned. Ned: Y'know, them chesser piecers ain't the same as checkers neitter. Pons: Right, Ned. There are kings, queens, bishops, knights, castles, and --- Ned: I was talkin' 'bout the piecers there, Pons, not them players. Pons: Right, me too. The pieces are - well to begin, pawns -- Ned: Pons? Pons: No, Ned. Pawns. Like in pawn shop. Ned: So they got them piecers from a pawn shop? Pons: Not at all, Ned. I hear those chess pieces there are hand carved from whale's teeth. Ned: Wonner if they pulled them teeth afore they started carvin' on them? Pons: Wait, Ned! Bluto's making his move.
