City

by Bill Schott

A sudden sawing light

cuts through the window

of the small, one-room apartment.

My crazy eye snaps open

as if to catch a ride on a ray

out of this dark and lonely place.

The other eye, blinded from beatings,

sinks deeper into my skull

where it sees things more clearly.

Tomorrow, when the sun rises,

and the city wakes from its sleeplessness,

I will try to see the future again.
