Interaction with a parent on my first day of teaching.
I Remember My First Day
by HarryT
I remember the first day I taught
New suit and tie just bought
Stood by my classroom door
A parent walked along the corridor
“Will you please get the teacher,” she said
Ma’am, I’m the teacher, I said, turning red
“Oh, no, you are far too young
You hardly look older than my son.”
I said, “I know I look fairly young
But believe me I’ll get the job done.”
She nodded her head and said, “Okay.”
Turned away and whispered, “Oy’vey”
Taught and administrate for 40 years
Content I choose education for my career
Still recall that mother and her oy’vey
My beginning a memorable first day
