The Poplars
by zanya
Lady Jayne strolled through the poplars. It was her favourite childhood walk with her american nurse, Dorothea.
Soon he would arrive, Marquis Edward. She shivered slightly in the April breeze.
Hearing footsteps behind her, she stopped.
'My dearest Jayne,' Edward began, 'even your widow's weeds cannot conceal your beauty.'
Jayne did not respond.
Courtship rituals were a distant memory.
He reached to take her gloved hand. Jayne recoiled.
A blackbird sang a sweet song among the poplars.
Jayne's countenance began to soften a little.
Spring was in the air. A ray of sunshine suddenly appeared from behind a grey cloud.
