Being Too Polite

Scurrying down a maple tree, bounding across the backyard, two squirrels race for the bread my mother spread on the patio. They bumped their little grey heads.
“Please excuse me,” the second one said.
First one said, “It’s quite alright, you may go ahead.”
“No, please, you first,” said number two.
“Thank you,” first squirrel said,
“But no after you, I must insist.”
Down dove a red-tailed hawk, chased them away and gobbled all the bread.
