A First and Last poem

On the Promenade

by damommy

With open parasol, the maid
was strolling down the promenade,
her eyes swept o’er a handsome blade.
She dropped her eyes, this modest girl,
in hopes to set his mind awhirl.

The fine young lad took up the bait,
could hardly think that fickle fate
had furnished reasons not to wait
to make acquaintance of this lass.
The chance ‘twas much too good to pass.

Just then, a blue and yellow kite
flew by and blocked the young man’s sight.
He looked around to left and right,
and who was sitting in the shade
with open parasol?  The maid.
