Money ain't so funny anymore
Promotion Pricing: Prohibitive!
by Elizabeth Emerald
StoryLand's real virtual estate market has gone haywire.
If you want to position your prose in a nice neighborhood (i.e. #20 "First Street"), prepare to purchase twice as many pumps (12) as you did two weeks ago (6).
If you aspire to the more upscale address, #12, which used to cost (circa) 10 pumps, it will cost you 25. (Price quotes as of noon today, 4/16/21.)
As for a prime spot, don't even go there.
Unless, that is, you have 35 pumps to spare; you'll have to evict the story residing at #1 First Street, which currently offers a payout of $1.20.
The upside from a reviewer's perspective is that prime pricing means prime time to rake in and rack up the bucks. To stash, until (let's hope) the market levels off and you can afford to post.
As regards promotional costs for poetry, definitely not gonna go there.
If you can stomach the gory details, see notes.

"Cliff Notes":
A bare-bones, 4-day, prose promotion, which pays the reviewer .52, requires the purchase of a "Treasure Chest," at $9.95. Pumps cost $2.95. Each of the first six pumps raises the payout by 5 cents, after which, each of the next nine pumps raises the payout by 2 cents; thus, it costs 15 pumps to position your story to the point it offers a payout of $1.00. Further promotion raises the payout by a penny per pump.
For the purpose of simplification and space-saving, I've rounded pump cost of 2.95 to $3 and Treasure Chest from $9.95 to $10.
Position 20: estimated 7-10 reviews (actual = 3-5)
Until recently (average) payout = .82 = 6 pumps = $18 (+ $10) = $28
As time of this posting payout = .94 = 12 pumps = $36 (+ $10) = $46
Position 12: estimated 10-15 reviews (actual = 5-7)
Until recently (average) payout = .90 = 10 pumps = $30 (+ $10) = $40
As time of this posting payout = 1.10 = 25 pumps =$75 (+ $10) = $85
In my experience, piecemeal pumping is to little avail, if I hadn't accrued at least six pumps (won from bonus reviewing), I wouldn't squander the few I had. Given that it now takes ten pumps to do the job of six, I'm waiting for prices to drop before I pump at all. Meantime, I thank my loyal fans for reading regardless.
