Spring Thirst

by RodG

It's early Spring and in my yard
a carnival of blooms has burst
from soil wrung dry by Winter's wrath.
The parched earth has a drunkard's thirst.

The wilting plants all plead with me
to act as Nature's hired man.
A faucet groans from long disuse
as I fill up my sprinkling can.

Though sprinkled long and lavishly,
the blossoms lap each drop I pour
like orphans starved in Dickens' book.
"Oh, please!" they beg. "May I have more?"

I lug the can from bed to bed
and sprinkle till my arm feels numb.
Despite my efforts I have failed
to sate their thirst: I'm truly glum.

I spy black clouds stampeding east
like thirsty cattle toward a stream.
I hail the flowers, wave the can.
"You'll be all right!" I loudly scream
.
