Salt of the Sea

by samandlancelot

She glanced toward her daughter’s bed and quickly erased the backstory of her own violated past and smiled. The sea’s waves slapped at her feet, made promises, and beckoned the bugler’s call to fallen arms and wavering resolve. Fight or Flight.

She felt the wet sand beneath her toes as water crawled up her dress and caressed her calves and knees. Hunger growled its objection as wetness consumed her protruding stomach. Soothing bubbles suckled her breasts with protection and hope. The salty taste of water tantalized her tongue and burned her nose as her head sunk beneath the sea’s pacified calm.

The sun was risen upon the earth as Lot’s hand gripped her wrist and pulled her toward the city of Zoar. Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire out of heaven.

And Lot’s wife looked back at the sea and became a pillar of salt.
