Winter is a state of mind

The World of Winter

by T.E. Loper

In winter when the world is white, and frac-
tured ice lies hidden 'neath the weighty pack
of snow on sleepy lakes, and children use
black coal to dot the eyes of frozen men,
perhaps a carrot nose becomes a pen
that punctuates the metaphors of rime;
we warmly wait inside and mark the time
until the spring returns the missing hues
that winter's woven blanket softly hides,
then slowly venture out where warmth abides.

But while I shiver in these northern climes
upon this wobbly orb, my southern friends
are basking in the heat that summer sends,
and watch their children making diff'rent rhymes.

Winter sonnet writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
Write a sonnet about WINTER. It can be any format. The only requirements are (1) that it has 14 lines and (2) that it rhymes. NO FREE VERSE.

On cold days like this, I often think how odd a February down under would be. I'm so used to associating winter with Christmas and the following months.

This is a Rosarian sonnet. A friend from Oz, Bruce Henderson, introduced me to this wonderful sonnet form. The rhyme scheme is: aabccddbee fggf. The pivot falls after line ten. This one's in iambic pentameter.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
