Little Clay Elephant

Free Verse Contest Winner

Created carefully with tiny hands
and stored in secret to harden.
A gift for Mommy,
With lopsided ears,
A broken trunk,
And no tail at all.
It is delightful.

A clump of rocklike mud
Containing reverence, respect, and patience...
Molded with a pure heart...
Sprinkled with reciprocated true love...
Pounded with effort and pinched with care...
Mixed with sweat and tears...
Entirely for me.

In a place of honor
It lives
For all to admire.

It is a reminder of a tree as a seedling;
It is A flash of lightning, gone so quickly;
It is a fox pup exploring
Its new forest home.

I gaze at it.
I caress it's lumpy form.
and remember my son.
It is the childhood of a man.
I will always cherish
A little clay elephant.
