Little Friend

Beeda

by Wils

I had a little toilet friend
Beeda was his name
He lived in that room day by day
Where the walls were all the same

Every time I’d go in there
And sit down to do my stuff
I’d call out “Beeda, are you there?”
He’d answer with a gruff

Now, no one could see Beeda
Except, of course, for me
And that would only happen
If I waited patiently

But when he finally did appear
Peeping round the door
We’d talk, and talk, and talk a while
And then we’d talk some more

About aeroplanes and great big trains
And the state of the world today
And what we’d do when we grew up
We both would have our say

Until there’d come a knocking
And a voice would say, quite low
“Hey, are you alright in there?
We’re all waiting to go!”

I’d open the door up just a crack
To find that in my view
Every household member
Was waiting for the loo

So I’d say goodbye to Beeda
Saying, “See you in the spring”
Then I’d step out of the doorway
To let someone do their thing

The other day I went in there
To talk to my good friend
And found, to my amazement
Our friendship at an end

He did not come up creeping
When I walked through the door
Without his non-stop chatter
Toilet time was such a bore

Had I done something to upset him?
And make him run away?
We had been the best of friends
I thought he’d always stay

As consolation Mum has bought me
A little yellow canary
It is something I can feel and touch
Which means Beeda was imaginary
