A Bargain
Treasure Collector?
I have a flaw, I'm embarrassed to say,
one that's annoying and gets in my way.
Now please don't laugh, because this isn't funny,
I like to collect things that cost me no money.
I like to grab things on the curb that are free,
anything with a "FREE" sign's attractive to me.
Things worthy of rescue like pieces of art,
though the frames are broken and falling apart.
Old chairs fascinate me, though springs are a-poppin,
"they're vintage!" I say, and once more I am stoppin.
Full boxes of stuff, what's inside I've no clue,
but there might be a treasure within, I'm no fool!
Whoever is with me, they just roll their eyes,
as they load up our trunk with the next big surprise!
And often I'm quite disappointed, but hey,
there are things that I can't believe folks threw away!
Like a full size pony toy, that didn't work,
but with a bit of tin foil and a few little twerks,
that pony was neighing and turning it's head!
Can you believe, "throw that thing out", someone said?
A full set of pans, round the edges quite rusty,
yet usable still, though they were a bit crusty.
Tables with legs broken, I knew I could fix
with some strong super glue, I know a few tricks.
Remember when I said that this wasn't funny?
This hobby of mine ends up costing me money.
You see, things pile up that I don't really use,
then I pay those who haul away people's refuse.
It's a strong compulsion that's hard to control,
but when I see a free pile, it speaks to my soul.
My kids gave up on me a long time ago,
they know they'll be loading up things people throw.
But it brings me joy, so what else can I say?
Who knows what great find I may pass by today!
