Goodnight Moon

by Wils

November’s Beaver moon hung low in the night sky. I caught a glimpse of it through my open window and couldn’t help but feel slightly comforted. It would be my dinner companion on this special night.

And on what would I be dining? The chef had pulled out all the stops tonight and prepared all my favourite foods; roast pork with mushroom sauce, a delicious chocolate mousse and a chardonnay to top it off. Of course, all of this was either canned or frozen, but I was in no position to quibble over such trivialities. This was a night to appreciate small mercies.

Taking a closer look at the moon I began my nightly pre-dinner prayers. The brightness of the moonlight shone into my dining room, creating a strange, auratic feel. Fitting, I thought, in times such as this.

As I wiped the last droplet of chocolate sauce from my lips, I heard the rattle of keys and my cell door opened. I was jostled to my feet and the customary shackles were applied. As I said goodnight to the moon and thanked it for the company, I couldn’t help but wonder if it would appear on the other side. The low mumblings of the prison chaplain muttering the Lords Prayer could be heard as I was led down the cold, dark passageway. The familiar call rang out; “Dead Man Walking!”
