Chapter 1
New Year Possibilities

By Gypsy Blue Rose

e x c i t e d

about New Year possibilities

 and anticipation

of the sweetest flowers—

the hummingbird

Author Notes Tanka is my favorite Japanese poetic form. It's meant to be romantic and passionate. It was created in the 8th century and used in the Japanese Imperial Court. It was used for lovers after a night together, each one wrote a tanka poem for the other. Most of the tanka poets are women. I feel a kinship with these women who were as passionate as I am.

Tanka is a Japanese unrhymed poem having about 12 to 31 syllables usually arranged in five lines. The syllable count is 31 syllables OR LESS. The first English poets who wrote tanka imitated the Japanese models of a 5-7-5-7-7 syllabic structure resulting in Tanka poems that were too long in comparison to Japanese tanka because Japanese syllables are shorter than English syllables. The third line transitions from the descriptive and image-focused beginning lines into a reflective metaphor, simile, or personification for the closing lines. The subject matter varies, but most tanka are emotionally stirring or profound, and many are about love.

After All This Time

By Gypsy Blue Rose

Author Note:rules in my author notes

after all this time

I still think about you

    from time to time —

as fire flames dance inside

and winter rages outside

or

when love doves

glide and soar in deep saffron

     and daisy heart shades—

 in a sunnyside up dusk

you're still woven into my thoughts

When You Are Not Around

when you are not around

I stand on the highest mount

     where the waves break—

woven with cool sea breeze

yearns for your touch

something is missing

in my being

when you are not around

SENRYU is a Japanese short unrhymed poem that uses imagistic language to express the essence of a deeply felt moment in time. Unlike Haiku, senryu is about human nature and doesn't need a season word. It resonates on a deeper level, leaving the reader enlightened and making an insightful connection between the top two lines and the last one, called the SATORI. It's written in 17 syllables OR LESS and three lines.

promising you'll come back
    then you leave me behind—

until the ferryman comes
to carry me beyond
the moon and sun

don't look for me

six feet under feeding bugs—

my spirit will soar

like a phoenix bird

rising from burning fields

Author Notes - The mythical phoenix spirit animal is the keeper of the fire in all of creation. It signifies transformation, death, and rebirth in its fire. As a powerful spiritual totem, the phoenix is the ultimate symbol of strength and renewal.

- Farmers burn their fields to remove plants that are already growing and to help the plants that are about to come up.

-JISEI (death poem) is a genre of Japanese poetry. It offers a reflection on the imminent death of the author or in nature. It originated in Zen Buddhism. to see source click here

JISEI can be written in HAIKU or TANKA form. Death poems are typically graceful, natural, and emotionally neutral. Death is described, metaphorically using references such as winter, phoenix bird, or falling cherry blossom to suggest the transience of life. wikipedia

Barren Fields Flourish

By Gypsy Blue Rose

Author Note:Tanka for Mother Nature

barren fields flourish

wherever you stroll

or wade through the rivers of life

skipping on stepping stones

midst fish, animals, and birds

Author Notes ENGLISH TANKA is a Japanese five line poem. Each line should be a cohesive phrase and the lines should be grammatically connected, it should not sound like a list or a telegram.. The five lines must be integrated into a unified poem. The fifth line should be the strongest line.

PIVOT LINE Pivot lines are a feature of Japanese tanka and are often a feature of
English tanka, but not necessarily so. A pivot line, usually line 3, can be read sensibly
with lines 1 and 2, and also sensibly with lines 4 and 5, a property that can be used to
introduce ambiguity and resonance into the poem.

One method of composing tanka is to write what is basically a haiku for lines 1, 2, 3, which deals with a natural subject and then write two more lines to append to that which deal with a human experience in a manner that has metaphorical, symbolic, or other resonance with the haiku.

Tanka may be beautifully lyrical poems, often about love, loss, longing, and similar aspects of our emotional lives,

Author Notes ZEN HAIKU LESSON click here if you want to read the complete lesson

ZEN HAIKU is a traditional form of art and the most popular kind of HAIKU. Japanese language HAIKU is written in 5/7/5 syllables and three lines and has been popular in the West for decades but in English language haiku is not expected to follow the 5/7/5 form. Unfortunately, many of the traditional principles of haiku writing are still not well understood in the West.

What is HAIKU, and what makes it a ZEN art?

HAIKU evolved from a poetic form called RENGA that originated in the 8th century. Each Renga Poem began with three lines of (5/7/5) five, seven, and five syllables, respectively, followed by two lines of seven syllables each, what later on became TANKA 5/7/5/7/7. The first verse was called the HOKKU.

MATSUO BASHO (1644-1694) is credited with making the first three lines of renka into stand-alone poems that we know as HAIKU. Basho was a Zen monk. His best-known haiku has been translated many ways:

old pond
a frog jumps in --
plop

English Haiku came to the West late in the 19th century. In the English language, poets force the Japanese 5/7/5 syllables in 3 lines templet. As a result, a lot of really bad haiku came to be written in English.

HAIKU is an expression of direct experience, not an expression of an idea about the experience.

For example, this is a really BAD HAIKU because it's an idea not an experience:

A rose represents
A mother's kiss, a spring day
A lover's longing.
............................................
Compare in contrast with a second HAIKU, not great but better because it brings you into the moment:

Wilted rose bouquet
Left in new grass
By the gravestone
..............................

Basho said, "When composing a HAIKU let there not be a breadth separating your mind from what you write; composition of a poem must be done in an instant."

HAIKU is about nature, and the poem should provide at least a hint about the SEASON OF THE YEAR, often in just one word called a KIGO.

Here's another haiku:

A cormorant dips
Into the pond; the floating
Yellow leaves bobble

"Yellow leaves" reveals it's a FALL HAIKU.

An important convention of HAIKU is the KIREJI or cutting word (usually a dash at the end of the second line). In Japanese, kireji divides the poem into two parts, often setting up juxtaposition. Put another way; the kireji cuts the train of thought in the haiku, which is a technique for giving the poem bite. This is the oh! aha! part that English haiku seems too often to leave out.

Here's a good haiku example, by haiku master, Kobayashi Issa (1763-1828). It's an experience, a moment in time. You can visualize it easily.

From the nostril
of the Great Buddha statue
comes a swallow

ENGLISH ZEN HAIKU has just the right amount of words, as brief as possible.
You might notice most of the examples of haiku above do not follow the five-seven-five syllable rule. The 5/7/5 pattern of syllables works better in Japanese. In English, it's better to use no more words than you need to use. If you find yourself adding an adjective here and there to force the 5/7/5 syllable count to work, that's not good HAIKU writing.

At the same time, if you are struggling to stay within the five-seven-five syllable rule, you may be trying to pack too much into one haiku. Try to tighten your focus. -- Lesson written by By Barbara O'Brien

And now that you know how to write a real haiku give it a try.

Tanka is a Japanese unrhymed poem having about 12 to 31 syllables usually arranged
in five lines and read in about two breaths in length when read aloud. The first poets who wrote tanka imitated the Japanese models of a 5-7-5-7-7 syllabic structure in five lines. This resulted in poems that were too long in comparison to Japanese tanka. The first tanka were padded or chopped to meet the fixed number of syllables. Additionally, the third line must transition from the descriptive and image-focused beginning lines into a reflective metaphor, simile, or personification for the closing lines. The subject matter varies, but most tanka are emotionally stirring or profound, and many are about love. click here if you want to read modern tanka examples === click here to read Tanka Society of America === click here if you want to read modern tanka rules

The poem's structure can be written in haiku 5/7/5 (17 syllables or less) or tanka 5/7/5/7/7 (31 syllables or less) forms. Death poems are typically emotional. Amber Dusk

By Gypsy Blue Rose

    looking for redemption ~

of a flawed past

that's hard to leave behind

Author Notes As I grow older and wiser, I realize that, for me, is easy to forgive others but hard to forgive myself. There lies the key to finding peace and self-love. For most of my life, I have felt like a broken person and an outsider. I have carried shame since I was a little girl for something that was not my fault. Learning to love myself is hard. It's a work in progress. I don't seek perfection, I want to be whole. Writing in fanstory has helped me very much. I thank all of you who review my work, regardless if I promote my work or not. I appreciate you.

Author Notes HAIKU is a Japanese short unrhymed poem that uses imagistic language to express the essence of a deeply felt moment in time. It resonates on a deeper level, enlightening the reader and making an insightful connection. English Haiku doesn't follow the 5/7/5 form, because Japanese syllables are much shorter. The rule of thumb is to write it as succinctly as possible and 17 syllables or less.

Author Notes Gogyohka is a five-line Japanese poetic form with no strict rules on syllable count but as brief as possible. You may use any theme. Lines are grammatically connected. Alliteration, personification, and metaphor are okay. It usually doesn't rhyme, but natural not forced rhymes are okay. Japanese poets have written gogyohka since the 1910s. However, they did not name the form until 1983 by poet Enta Kusakabe.

Chapter 61
Raging Against Death

By Gypsy Blue Rose

raging against death

and sequestered

   by turbulent darkness—

 I seek peace and refuge

in the eye of the storm

Author Notes As far as we can tell, there are only two people on record that claim to have been in the center of a tornado and lived. They were both farmers. The first man was Will Keller, from Greensburg, Kansas.

On June 22, 1928, Mr. Keller was checking out the damage to his wheat crop. He spotted a tornado heading his way. Keller rushed his family to their storm cellar and decided to take another look. Once inside the swirling cloud, Keller said that everything was "as still as death." When he looked up, he saw the circular opening directly overhead. The rotating cloud walls were clearly visible by constant bursts of lightning.

The second account 1951 was from Roy Hall, a soybean farmer from McKinney, Texas, who had a similar experience. He heard a loud rumbling followed by complete silence. The same storm killed 100 Texans, but Hall and his family survived. for more information click here

Rolling Billows

By Gypsy Blue Rose

rolling billows

ferry my love with the ebb

   to reach my lover's shore—

I bear a precious gift

the stars in a bottle

Author Notes "The stars in a bottle " is a zen concept of oneness. Haiku comes from zen buddhism.

ONENESS is a Zen Buddhism concept (and other Eastern religions), -- Everything in the world is connected- the sky is in the ocean, the cloud is in the lake, the stars are in a bucket of water, the sunrise in a dewdrop, etc... and humans are connected too. People are inseparable. When people are born they become the wave and when they die they recede back into the ocean. Nothing changes. There really is no birth or death—just a continuation in different forms. In that way, everything is connected.

Chapter 66
The Birthday Girl

By Gypsy Blue Rose

Author Note:dedicated to all the birthday girls

The Birthday Girl

no more innocence

no more walks on the beach

no more looking for treasures

no more playing in the sea

as a child

the beach was a wonderland

with fishstars, smooth stones,

blue smooth glass, seashells,

and mom's delicious snacks

as a young woman

the ocean meant romance

passion and dance

but all of that is gone

meditating cross-legged

facing Mother Ocean

the ebb carries

her old memories

into the sea

all and all

she has no regrets

today is her birthday

one year more

one year less

she is comforted

with a thought,

 getting old is not bad—

it means you're still alive

Author Notes This free verse poem is about growing old from a woman's perspective.

This is just a poem. Many older women have full happy lives, they are vibrant, and in good health. But most women can probably relate more or less.

By Gypsy Blue Rose

Author Note:For Dean. Creepy poem to get into the Halloween spirit :)

time and death will not keep me away

I’ll join you in the beyond

where the astral realms are

I'll follow your perfume scent

I‘ll set you free

from Gehenna’s evil fiends

and we’ll ascend

to Elysium Fields forever

Author Notes Elysium = the abode of the blessed after death in classical mythology
Gehenna = hell, purgatory, a place or state of misery

In Jitterbug Perfume, published in 1985, Tom Robbins combines realism with fantasy and tells his tale of intertwined lives across centuries and the way they had to find each other was the perfume scent. more information

The Astral Plane Mythology = The astral plane of existence it's a myth that started in medieval times. People thought the soul crossed the celestial spheres in its astral body on the way to being born and after death.
