"Learning To Fly"

Prologue
It's Time

By Debra White

The best of me has gone astray,
absconded over time.
I didn't feel it happening,
the slow but sure decline.

I was so busy nurturing
and tending to my brood,
I turned a blind-eye to my needs
and calm complacence stewed.

--0--

I know it's time to make it right,
I owe myself. And when
I've figured out what gives me wings,
I'll learn to fly again.

Author Notes Hello and thank you so much for reading the prologue to my book.

The contents of the book will be as much of a surprise to me as to you... With no fixed plan, I aim to restore myself one blessing, experience and moment at a time.

Each chapter may contain poetry, diary entries, prose.....whatever works for me in the moment. I just want to record the things that move me and make me feel.

Please feel free to dip in and out as you please, you will always be welcome :)

with love, Debra

Chapter 1
Splash!

By Debra White

It must've been around half nine,
before the sun turned up the heat
that Moll and I walked out the door,
then down the drive and up our street.

We ventured left, along the lane
and headed t'wards Moll's happy place.
(She pulled a bit, she always does,
as if she's in some secret race.)

She led me to the gravelled path.
I let her loose, and like a flash
she bounded through the sea of scrub
and flopped into the water -
Splash!

Author Notes Friday 26th May 2023.

Learning from Molly that sometimes you just have to jump into the water!

Chapter 2
Lovely

By Debra White

Bleary eyed,
sunglasses on.
Unbrushed hair
slung in a bun.
Wearing clothes
from yesterday.
Lovely, lazy Saturday.

Headed out,
just Moll and me.
Took in all
the scenery.
Shared our smiles
with passers by.
Not a cloud was in the sky.

Carefree stride
and waggy tail.
Moll and me
retraced our trail.
Lady stopped
us, just to say -
"You look lovely!" - Made my day :)

Author Notes Saturday 27th May 2023

When I got up yesterday morning, Molly was desperate to go for her walk, so I threw on some clothes, tied up my hair, popped my sunglasses on and took her straight out.

It was such a lovely, sunny morning that there were already a few people out and about at 8am. Everyone was so smiley and cheerful.

On our way back home, a lady that I vaguely know called over to say good morning and told me that I looked lovely! What a gorgeous start to the day!

Chapter 3
Tummy Talk

By Debra White

I'm writing these words from my tummy,
it's had a delectable day
and now, quite contented and chummy,
it seems to have something to say -

'Rumble, rumble, growl and grumble,
gurgle, burble, grooooaaaaan!'

Author Notes Thursday 1st June 2023

I think what my tummy is trying to say, is - 'Thank you so much for the delicious Thai green chicken curry and rice you gave me for dinner!'

The food made me (and my tummy) really happy! :)

The noises your stomach makes, called borborygmi, are normal intestinal sounds that occur during the digestive process. The smooth muscles that line the gut contract and squeeze food and gas through 30 feet of small intestine and large intestine. (henry ford.com)

Chapter 4
Not Staying In

By Debra White

Day too nice
to stay inside.
Grabbed the bikes,
went for a ride.
Hit the trails,
enjoyed the view -
Stopped for lunch (and ice-cream too!)

Author Notes Friday 2nd June 2023

Shaun (my husband) and I had a lovely few hours in the sunshine riding the trails. We cycled 27 miles, starting from our home, stopping for lunch at Nostell Priory and then calling at Hemsworth Water Park for ice cream, before heading back home.

Why should we stay in, just because the teenagers are sloths! Their loss!

Chapter 5
I Smile and Reminisce

By Debra White

I came across this photograph -
It made me laugh!
I had to share -
Look at our hair!

Our parents must have been quite mad.
We looked so bad,
but in those days
it was the craze

to sport the pudding basin style!
So now, I smile
and reminisce
on childhood bliss.

Author Notes Today, I came across this old photograph of myself, two of my brothers and a friend. Our haircuts were terrible, but we were far too busy enjoying being children of the seventies to care about our hair!

I havent changed all that much in the last forty years!

Chapter 6
A Photograph

By Debra White

A photograph
can wake a dozing yesterday.
A photograph
can trigger tears or raise a laugh,
bring brightness to a dreary day,
allowing you to drift away -
A photograph.

Author Notes This photograph took me back eleven years to when my youngest daughter was around eighteen months old.

I can remember the scent of her skin and the weight of her in my arms and how it felt to have her little arms around my neck. The softness of her cheeks and the silkiness of her fine blonde baby hair. I remember feeling tired and happy and fulfilled and capable. I remember my husband taking the photo as our two older children played with their cousins - It was my dad's 60th birthday and we'd all gone out to celebrate.
I remember this day like it was yesterday :)
