"An April Fool"

Prologue
2023 Prologue

By sunnilicious

Hellow my dear friends,

I have missed you very much. And another year has rolled around. Lent started. Spring started. Ramadan started. And I haven't even eaten a pint of ice cream for the season yet. Also, I am anxious for National Poetry Writing Month, April 2023 to begin. No writing prompts from the NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo website are going to influence me this year. I have ideas to place into action...

I have been thinking about a poetry theme since the start of the new year. I can't tell you too much. I'm armed with creativity, newsletter articles, "Poetry for Dummies" and, and...

The world's a big place
Loads of info stacking up...
Some quirky, but true.

Thank you for supporting my hobby by reading and/or reviewing my creative writings in the form of poetry work.

Love always,
Sunnilicious
aka Soonire-Alicia Seecharan

Lighthouses ---
The USA first built one in 1716.
Currently, there are 779 houses here.
US coastal waters hold the most in this world;
Historical navigational treasures.

Chapter 2
The Flintstones

By sunnilicious

"The Flintstones" was contentious when it first started.
Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty... Where to begin?
ABC grounded a cartoon on Primetime,
It was the work of MGM's Hanna Barbera;
Animation before bedtime.

The New York Times printed a bad review.
Jackie Gleason wanted to sue. He was so blue,
It was The Honeymooners in before Christ times.
The show was niched and relatable
To American suburbanites everywhere.

The creators used psychology to win hearts;
Cavemen dressed in animal skins
Blessed to have cars, ties,work, pets, children, friendships
And stylish wives with pretty barefeet in houses;
Animation truly blossomed from there.

Chapter 3
Extraordinary Eyes

By sunnilicious

The first set of eyes were found on insects...
This is a fact.
Human beings can view much further than they think...
This is a fact.
Also, over 100 million colors can be viewed...
This is a fact.
Blinking is an unconscious norm...
Unless, people take the time to think about it;
Both statements are facts.
Colossal Squids have the largest eyes in the world;
They measure around 11-inches in width.
Don't ever prove this fact to me, Or I will scream.
Everyone was born with brown eyes,
But genetic mutation brought blue, and green, eyes.
Science has proven this a fact.

Chapter 4
Ooo Honey

By sunnilicious

royal honey found
scientist raids king tut's tomb
natural nectar
over five thousand years old
sweetness that couldn't be denied

healthy with flavor
keep in airtight container
honey wont expire

Author Notes Note: The article stated that an archelogist in 1923 found the honey from 3,000 years ago. King Tut was buried 3200 BC. I did the math and found the honey to be 5132 years old (3200 add to 1923). So, double checking is good.

Chapter 5
Buttering Up

By sunnilicious

Think, think... How to butter them up?
Bread, margarine and a tea cup;
It sounds lame but they enjoy it,
Yet, black tea is the pits at night.

Think think... How to butter them up?
Toasted pound cake with fresh butter,
And mixed berries with herbal tea.
All sweet treats are good. I agree!

Chapter 6
Shopping Malls

By sunnilicious

We have to go to school.
We have to go to work.
We have to enjoy life,
Also, we live in comfort and socialize,
But there isn't always a party,
And so, we go to the mall.

The shopping mall is a social environment.
They have grocery stores, pharmacies,
department stores, gift stores, food courts,
gyms, movie theaters, amusements and more...
They have parking lots with electric car outlets,
And if close to home, familiar faces.

The shopping mall is always there.
A place to buy things we need or want.
A place to buy things to create comfort,
When we are at school, work or home.
A place to linger and observe;
art, architecture, people, cars, prices.
A place we accumulate memories
From socializing with others or not.

Author Notes NOTES: I always have a mall to visit. I don't really go anymore because of the pandemic, but it's nice to know they are there. I went to REI at the Burbank Empire Center today to pickup some spring/summer things to enjoy the mountains and parks nearby me. Also, I went another strip mall to pick up a Subway tuna mayo footlong. Have a GOOD FRIDAY into Easter Weekend :)

Chapter 7
Ketchup

By sunnilicious

This couplet is about ketchup
I hope it's not a big mess up

Ketchup is an Ancient Chinese Secret
A tonic made with anchovies to keep

British sailors brought ketchup home
It was different and unlike creamy foam

The cooks played with the recipe
Mushrooms and walnuts but no Hennessy

Two centuries later, tomatoes were the tweek
A genius idea approved by more than just geeks

And that first tomato recipe was published
By an American horticulturist

Tomato ketchup is the superfood
A condiment given much gratitude

Author Notes NOTE: It's Good Friday. I couldn't find anything about Easter stuff, but there is plenty going on... And I'm sure ketchup, (mustarf and relish) is popular as ever this holiday weekend. Have fun and make some great memories :)

Chapter 8
Rain

By sunnilicious

The bright blue sky suddenly turns cloudy
Cotton clouds are wavelike and choppy
And the smell of rain approaching is uplifting
Somehow, the scent deepens to tickle the senses
As the sky slowly darkens gray
A drizzle paces itself into a downpour

The raindrops move in the direction of the wind
Unbridled rain holds no shape
No thunder, No lightning
An afternoon rainshower with no melody
But a constant pitter-patter of rain plays on
Most drearily:drumming on random umbrellas

Chapter 9
Jellybeans Day

By sunnilicious

Fresh buttered toast sandwiched with jellybeans
Cubed apple with jellybeans
I looked all over for the Easter Bunny
Bbq'ed chicken, deviled eggs, potato salad and jellybeans
Leftovers of my cubed apple and jellybeans

I looked all over for the Easter Duck
Grilled lamb burgers for dinner with greenbeans
Cupcakes frosted with coconut and jellybeans
I don't know why I have a tummy ache
I better brush my teeth before I fall asleep.

Colored candy beans
Hard outside, Chewy inside
Tasty Easter Treat.

Author Notes Note: I wrote a seasonal poem for Easter. I read the two articles, but only used jellybean descriptions in the articles. So, i played with that in the 5-7-5.

Chapter 10
Rabbits, Hares & Squirrels

By sunnilicious

Rabbits live everywhere except Antarctica...
I must live in Antarctica,
Because I haven't seen a bunny yet.

Be content in knowing hares aren't rabbits.
Hares are born with fur that changes color;
They must be undomesticated and wild.
Bunnies are born furless and preemie,
Because they want all our love.

Bunnies have a third eyelid that is clear.
So, they look awake when they are asleep.

The Rabbit is nicknamed "Bunny".
The Squirrel use to be nicknamed "Bun".
Rabbits and squirrels look nothing alike.

Beatrix Potter was an Victorian-era author
That wrote fables about bunnies and hares.
These books and breeder shows drew a buying frenzy,
But it was mostly for the hares.

The Easter Bunny is just a silly notion,
Because there is no history;
No evil horror films either...
However, there are recipes for
Rabbit Cacciatore and Rabbit Stew;
Play with the bunnies, but don't eat them.

Chapter 11
Denim

By sunnilicious

My parents placed me in pretty dresses,
Because "denim jeans are lowly".
I worked and bought myself denim clothing,
Because The Gap and Levis were a thing.
I wear my blue jeans proudly;
button-fly, zip, pull-up, elastic band.
It makes me feel like everyday people.

Also, I have found jeans to be comfortable.
I get energy from wearing a pair of jeans,
To do the chores and run weekly errands.
To me, denim holds more than durability;
Blue jeans hold some sort of superpower.

I'm glad blue jeans were banned from the White House.
Politicians don't wear blue jeans or act carouse...
It's not their norm during business hours.
They must keep up with the office standards,
However, they can wear blue jeans at home,
And connect to the other everyday people.

Chapter 12
Hummingbird to Hummingbirds

By sunnilicious

Hummingbird huntdown
Awaiting an ambrosia
So sweetly swooshing

Hummingbirds fly around holding their rhythm. That must keep them with a quick metabolism, to average 1,200 heartbeats per minute, flying through the air and streets.

There are 350 hummingbird faunas. That number is an estimate around the globe. The nectar count is higher coming from floras, because there are an abundance of birds and bees... I hope.

The smallest bird in the world is found in Cuba. Laying low not be detained at the borders. They lay eggs cradle in nests big as a quarter. Bee Hummingbirds have some screaming, "Hallelujah!".

Author Notes NOTE: Cuba is a Caribbean Island not South Florida.

Chapter 13
Engineering

By sunnilicious

Engineering creates enablers
No matter the industry
Geek geniuses design
Incredible practical products
Newfangled to have solved a problem
Evolution transpires
Evolving niche audiences
Researchers and repairmen standby
Inspecting, tweeking, planning, directing
Nicely refining to upgrade
Great ideas that keep people eager about life.

Author Notes NOTE: I read the below referenced article. However, vacation destinations aren't what I think about when talking about engineering. Although, it is a truth but one I have just learnt about from "Interesting Facts". To me engineering is a work title that belongs to people educated to build, design, plan and/or delegate products of all sorts. I'm thinking architecture of buildings, automobiles, pens, televisions, cameras, As Seen On TV, computers, telephones, hybrid animals, hybrid plants, airplanes, etc... Things that I know about in my life. So, I defined "Engineering" to the best of my knowledge in the most generic of ways. Please don't be offended if you are an engineer because I was being non-specific.

Modernization

Chapter 15
Popcorn

By sunnilicious

Nebraska Kernels
Air, stove or microwave pop
Explosive snacking.

Popcorn
Sea salt with avocado oil is new,
But movie theater butter is traditional,
And kettle corn is all I have in the kitchen...
Let's go with that.

Freshly popping in the microwave,
It fills the air like a county fair;
Shall no corn kernel go unpopped.

I never plan to play hot potato...
Grab hold to one or two popcorns,
Or hold on to a handful,
But don't burn up those fingertips;
Better put it all in a bowl,
And plop on the sofa to enjoy that movie.

Author Notes NOTES: I couldn't fact check this article with microwavable popcorn bags. Also, the interesting facts didn't really carry a wow factor for me. Popcorn is just good food. Simple as it is to make or buy. So, this is just a poem submission for the 15th day of National Poetry Writing Month, April 2023.

Dinosaurs

The dinosaurs once roamed the Earth
Anything about dinosaurs is good
One asteroid didn't kill their worth
Entertainment misunderstood

Lizard depictions won over sporty feathers
If we want to know more we research it
Dino gummies anytime or weather
Dino show, or movie... Let me get an admit.

What flavor would that dino ice cream be?

Author Notes NOTES: I took 2 days off and became very sick when jumping on again. It all feels so left field like surreal. I am a lot better now but still underweather. Forgive me. I would try to catch up.

Flying Animals

By sunnilicious

Thinking of flying animals,
birds in their many species come to mind,
but there are some more creatures, radical even.
We should always be kind
to people, animals and nature.
So, this is a more to know poem:
flying fish, paradise tree snake,
mobula ray is a flat-head shark,
flying squirrels, crab spiders,
bats and wallace's flying frog.

Chapter 26
Roadtrip Grand Canyon, AZ, USA

By sunnilicious

The scariest roadtrip ever
is driving through Arizona.
The driving routes are safe with much to discover,
but the beautiful Grand Canyon can be daunting.
The mountains, canyons, landscapes,shapes, colors,
echoes and visions of the past can be intense.

expansive landscape
hundreds of caves to explore
freedom in echoes

Author Notes NOTES: I did a dumb roadtrip through Washington, Oregon, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and back in like 2010 or 2012. I don't ever want to do that long of a roadtrip again. I am all for natural beauty, but rather take an airplane, hotel and tours, especially in those parts of the USA. Also note, there are approximately 1000 caves in the Grand Canyon, but only a few hundred are cleared for exploration.

Earth

By sunnilicious

The Earth looks round and that is good enough for me;
Let the planet spin on as I run free.
Time was discovered by man to mark our moments,
But the sun, moon and stars guide all of our movements.
The Earth is alwyas going through evolution;
Our emotions should impact and change destruction.
To die in weather destruction is to be a chosen;
God, am I running in your direction?
