"The Walrus and the Starfish"

Chapter 1
The Walrus and the Starfish

By damommy

The Walrus and the Starfish walked
together hand-in-hand,
and as they walked, the two friends talked
as they strolled ‘cross the sand.

Said Walrus to the Starfish, “Why
did we not ever think
of how stars hang high in the sky
but pebbles always sink?

“How boats can float atop the sea,
and ducks can swim there, too;
an acorn grows into a tree,
and horses put on shoes.

“Who was it thought of big balloons,
just why don’t pigs have wings?
I want to know who writes the tunes
that every birdie sings.

“My pointy pal, please tell me all
the answers if you know,
that some of us have only hooves,
and some of us have toes.”

The Starfish said, “My whiskered friend,
I do not have a clue.
If I find out, you can depend
I’ll share it all with you.”

Author Notes Don't laugh, but I drew this.

Chapter 2
The Starfish Answers

By damommy

The Walrus and the Starfish talked
as they strolled ‘cross the sand,
and while they talked, the two friends walked
together hand-in-hand.

The Starfish said, “Oh, Whiskered One,
I’ve pondered things you thought,
and still I haven’t found as yet
the answers that you sought.

“I think the stars hang high in sky
because they’re glued to stay,
and pebbles sink to ocean floor
because a lot they weigh.

“Whyever would a pig need wings?
A silly notion, that.
Where would we find some big enough
to carry all that fat?

“I have no thoughts on big balloons,
or why a hoof or toe.
So many things in this great world
that we will never know.

“Let’s focus on our friendship, and
I think you soon will see,
for us, the world’s a happy place
when there’s a you and me.”

Chapter 3
Old Friends

By damommy

The Walrus and the Starfish talk
of things few others do,
like where do clouds fill up with rain,
and why the ocean’s blue.

“I think, dear friend,” the Walrus said,
“that we should try to fly.
Just think of all the things we’d see
if we could sail the sky.”

“Oh, not again,” the Starfish said,
“I can’t take any more.
If you recall, my flippered friend,
we tried that once before.

“We flapped our arms ‘til they went limp
while passing seagulls laughed,
and big blue whales came swimming by,
and said, ‘You must be daft.’”

“Oh, Starfish, ye of little faith,
can you give up so soon?
We’d play hopscotch from star to star,
have luncheon on the moon.”

“When we come home, can we go back,
dance on the Milky Way?
And could we ride a shooting star,
grab comet tails in play?”

The Walrus said, “Of course, we can.
We’ll do the things you said.
And when we’ve worn ourselves plumb out,
why, then, we’ll go to bed.”

They went along in silence and
the two walked hand in hand.
A friendship like this needs no words -
their hearts will understand.
