"Poems through the seasons"

Prologue
Poems through the seasons

By eliz100

This book is a collection of poems to celebrate poetry month. My theme is poetry through the seasons. There will be eight poems about each season. That leaves two leftover which will be an opening and closing poem. I am looking at this as an adventure. My first adventure writing daily

Chapter 1
All About Me.

By eliz100

All about me

My name is Lee

Born Elizabeth Ann

Born Woman

Still am

Eldest of six

What a mix

Do what I can

Still am

Mother of three

On the family tree

Two girls and a boy

Oh! what a joy

Love to read

I have a need

A book a day

Makes me gay

Swim like a fish

Go with a swish

Dive deep.

Then leap

Nursing's my bag

It is quite mag

Psych my game

My call to fame

Grandmother of three

Oh! wish I could see

Only zoom calls these days

That's how it lays

I have come to the end

Of the story I penned

Hope you enjoyed it

At least a little bit

Great place to be

Chapter 2
Winter Wonderland

By eliz100

Crisp cold windy air

Children everywhere

Like polka dots placed

On the crystal snow

The hill was perfect

For saucers and sleds

Kids went flying down

And trudging back up

The ice that is flat and fast

Silver blades gliding

Couples hand in hand

Dancing on the pond

Some building snow people

Rolling big snowballs

Carrot for a pointy nose

Coal for the ebony eyes

Fire and hot chocolate

By the skating pond

Warming inside and out

The best winter day

Chapter 3
Is it grey or gray?

By eliz100

Have you ever wondered why

There are two gra/eys:

Mirriam Webster defines them

Exactly the same: a dull color

So the mystery is solved

You can use either one

To describe a gloomy color

So it is your choice

Gra/ey skies of winter

Clouds hanging low

Depressing the earth

Pregnant with snow

Gunmetal gra/ey

Battleship gra/ey

Gra/ey volcanic ash

Gra/ey sickly paiior

Even Crayola has two gra/eys

In its 124 crayon box

Crayons get worn down

But never the gra/eys

So remember you

are never wrong

Using gray or grey

Mystery solved

Chapter 4
Hopelessness

By eliz100

The spark of life gone
The soul broken and battered
Life slipping away

Chapter 5
The Winter Pine Tree

By eliz100

The winter pine tree

Stands majestically

Subtle dark greens

Dress her beautifully

She sways in the wind

As if ballet dancing

Snow covers her limbs

Needles are glistening

Under the branches

Bunnies are burrowing

Deep in the tree

Birdies are nesting

Christmas is coming

Who will be chosen

The pines are whispering

Will it be me or you

The ultimate joy

The angel wearing

On Christmas eve

Carolers singing

Chapter 6
Winter

By eliz100

Winter of my life, time to settle scores

Interesting perspective, looking back

Need only the essentials, as things drop away

Time to make peace with my higher power

Enjoying last times with family and friends

Rejoicing in a life well-lived, to the end

Chapter 7
New Year's Eve 2020 to 2021

By eliz100

Father Time was tired and spent

It had been a long, hard year

Country panicked over Covid 19

On edge, waiting for the vaccine

"Where is that Baby New Year?"

"It is almost midnight, just minutes to go,"

Father Time slumped down in a chair

His white toga a lot worse for wear

Remembering George Floyd's death

Followed by the rioting and unrest

He breathed a great sigh of relief

As his life force was diminishing

"Is that the Baby I see?"

Coming to relieve me.

Ten, nine, eight, seven, six

Five, four, three, two, one

Happy New Year!

The baby is here

Father time fades away

A new year, a new day.

Author Notes I want to thank Cleo85 for another wonderful picture. It reminded me of two events the old year passing and the new year coming.

Chapter 8
Melting Snow

By eliz100

droplets trickle off

the heavily laden boughs

life renews again

Chapter 9
Early Spring at Lake Lorain

By eliz100

The geese are resting on the lake

Northward bound another year

A hint of spring is in the air, but

Old man winter just can't let go

The tree branches are still bare

But are tipped with tiny buds

The daffodils have sprouted

Tulips coming right behind

There is an odd patch of gray snow

The weak spring sun could not find

"Spring is surely coming!"

Says the birdie in the tree

Author Notes This is my first poem in the spring section of my book, Poems Through the Seasons. I choose the light green background to indicate the beginning of spring.

Chapter 10
i am a seed

By eliz100

i am a seed pod

ready to sprout push pop

life begins anew

Author Notes I tried to put myself in the seeds place. I am not sure how it worked. Feedback appreciated.

Chapter 11
Forsythia

By eliz100

The tiny yellow petals

Adorn the bush

Like Belle's dress

In Beauty and the beast

A splotch of sunshine

On an umber background

Winters trying to hang on

Spring marches in

Author Notes I am sure you noticed the picture is not a forsythia bush. I could not find one. This gives the impression of what I was trying to describe.

Chapter 12
Cherry Blossoms

By eliz100

delicate blossoms

pink and white peace offering

across the ocean

Chapter 13
America Today

By eliz100

The Statue of Liberty is crying

So many people coming in

Children unaccompanied

Tired, hungry, alone

Pray for the USA

From the Golden Gate Bridge

To the George Washington Bridge

Discontent, unrest, violence

So much destruction, why

Pray for the USA

Mt Rushmore's residents

Noble men all four

Would look askance

At the attack on the capitol

Pray for the USA

Chapter 14
High School Graduation

By eliz100

High School graduation

Cause for celebration

Final emancipation

Many salutations

Comes with expectations

Decisions and options

Need much concentration

To set plans in motion

Exclamation

Floatation

Author Notes This is one of my spring poems. Tried some rhyming.

Chapter 15
Mothers

By eliz100

Mother, Mom, Mama, Maaaaa!

Open to all kid's needs

Takes life as it comes

Heart that grows exponentially

Everyone before her

Rest will come much later

Sacrifice is her game

Author Notes This is another poem in my spring section.

Chapter 16
April 15

By eliz100

Today is tax day

Time for you to pay

Search for info

What a mess

Fill in the blanks

Add and subtract

Hope the final number

Has a plus sign

April sixteenth

Another year done

Chapter 17
Summertime

By eliz100

Summertime and sunshine

Unusual seashells to find

Making sand castles with moats

Meeting new friends

Exploring the sandy beach

Running into the waves

Tumbling in the water

Into the surf the sand and the sun

Makes a wonderful day

Excited summer is here

Chapter 18
Sam

By eliz100

There once was a man named Sam

He had a blue and white van

It looked like an old rusty can

Bam! Here comes Sam

Sam had a very soft bed

Where he could lay his head

The quilt was white and red

It was quite the spread

Sam asked Sal to help him

The light was very dim

He had to measure and pin

The covering for the tin

Sam liked the little tots

He made them treats in his pots

He helped them do dot-to-dots

Then put them to bed in their cots

Sam had a dog named King Tut

He lived in the yard in a hut

Through and through he was a mut

Head held high he would strut

Chapter 20
Summer Soul

By eliz100

The summer sun stretches my soul

My summer soul flies with the kites

Against a bright sky of blue and white

I enjoy the peace of a wooded glen

My soul is bathed in restful quiet

Refreshed awaiting the next adventure

Looking at the ebony star-filled sky

My soul expands to the edges

Of God's infinite universe

My summer soul prays everywhere

Delighted in my God connection

Thankful for His wonderful creation

Chapter 21
The Wayne County Fair

By eliz100

My excitement increases exponentially

As I walk through the huge sea of cars

Approaching the well-lit entrance gate

Finally another year at the county fair

The beginning of the well-worn midway

Entices with mouth-watering smells

Frying sausage and peppers

French fries and fried perogies

Cotton candy and fried ice cream

I grabbed my friend's hand and began to run

Dashing around mothers with strollers

Between couples strolling hand in hand

The lights and sounds could be heard

First to the ticket booth -one dollar a ride.

We start with a speedy one - The Rocket

Then on to the excitement of the funhouse

In the dark with moving floors and distorting mirrors

On to the carousel -I pick a sleek black stallion

The games are calling -we shoot water guns

throw baseballs and pick numbered ducks

Hoping to win the huge stuffed animal

The pungent scents lead us to the animals

The 4-H kids stand by their well-earned prizes

Prized blue, red, and yellow shiny ribbons

For well-raised steer and clean shiny. huge pigs

The fair sights and sounds slowly recede

As we trudge slowly back to our car

Holding on to this fair's wonderful memories

Dreaming of this fair's awsome memories

Chapter 22
fire flys

By eliz100

nature's way of light

no batteries needed

just God's energy

Author Notes I could not find a picture of fire flys, I thought this abstract might work.

Chapter 23
summer breeze

By eliz100

Summer breeze makes me sneeze

Achoo, achoo

Then gently kisses my cheek

Kiss, Kiss

The breeze fills the sails

Huffing and puffing with ease

Chapter 24
The Old Man

By eliz100

The old man sat

On a mat with a cat.

Wearing a funny hat

The old man went to bed

With music in his head

He wore a cap of red

The old man had a kit

In which he learned to knit

A cushion on which to sit

The old man had to stop

When he saw the cop

He almost blew his top

The old man had some grub

That he ate in the pub

And gave his tummy a rub

Chapter 25
The autum of my life

By eliz100

My most frequent question

Can you say that again?

After my husband had yelled

From another room

I still did not hear it

I get up from my seat

Taking a moment to stabilize

So I do not end up on the floor

Dizzyness comes and goes

I have had twelve head injuries

In the last year, pacemaker placed

I had surgery on my eyes

Way back in my 50's

No glasses, it was freeing

Now I am squinting to read

The fine print, forget about it

One knee is bionic the other okay

I move a lot slower now

No New York City sidewalk pace

I keep adding supplements

Turmeric for inflammation

Selenium for hand pain

Living is better than its opposite

So I thank God for every day

Author Notes Feeling a little down today so this just flowed out. I am writing a poem a day, so I take what comes.

Chapter 26
The Spirit Emerges

By eliz100

I stand on the edge of the cliff

Face into the howling wind

My warrior spirit coming alive

My feet are rooted to the ground

Gathering strength from the earth

Allowing the spirit to fill my skin

The roaring of the waves

Crashing against the crag

Connect me to the universe

Shrieking wind and waves

Assaults my essence

Electrifying my spirit

"Bring it on, Universe!"

Chapter 27
Fall Foliage

By eliz100

Brilliant canopy

Gold, orange, and red fireworks

Before winter stings

Chapter 28
Fall Festival

By eliz100

The farmer cuts the corn maze

After he harvests the corn

If you get stuck find the tower

To plan your escape route

The apples are ready for harvest

Tubs filled with water apples bobbing

Put your face in, hands behind your back

Heads pop up with an apple in their teeth

Big orange pumpkins ripen on the vine

Pick one, then onto the carving station

A decision will be made funny or scary

Pumpkins on the porch lit from inside

Halloween is coming, Halloween is coming

Witches and black cats riding brooms

Spider webs abound with hairy spiders

White filmy ghosts floating everywhere

Chapter 29
Anger

By eliz100

Some describe it as red hot

Others as a fire in the belly

Or an erupting volcano

It sits deep in the gut

Growing and spreading

Through the body

Energized to the nth degree

Ready to run or fight

From the saber tooth tiger

Can't run or fight

Breathe, take a deep breath

And count to a hundred
