Chapter 3
First Peach Blossoms

By Debra White

spring's sweet aroma
permeates Delaware State --
     first peach blossoms

Author Notes I have written my haiku in 5-7-4 syllable count and have used the Japanese Seasons (Kigo) Almanac as inspiration: Insects awaken: March 11th-15th - first peach blossoms.

The Peach blossom was adopted as Delaware's floral emblem by an act of the legislature on March 9, 1895. In 1953, the Peach Blossom was named as the official state flower.

Peach blossoms appear before the leaves and have a soft, delicate texture with a sweet aroma that is reminiscent of honey and almond.

Chapter 4
Breakers

By Debra White

-- ocean --
wild, powerful,
crashing, lashing, thrashing -
shore receives almighty splashing
-- breakers --

Author Notes Apart from the syllable requirement stated, I was unsure as to any other requirements of the cinquain form. I did a little googling, came across many varied tutorials and chose one to follow. The requirements are:

1. Line one begins with one vague or general one-word topic.
2. Line two includes two vivid/colourful adjectives.
3. Line three includes three -ing ending action words that fit the topic.
4. Line four is a four word phrase that captures the feel of the topic.
5. Line five is one word that is specific to the topic you chose in line one.

Breakers - A heavy sea wave that breaks into white foam on the shore.

Chapter 7
Kingfisher

By Debra White

Kingfisher perches on lotus leaf,
surveilling the movements beneath.
Practised eyes don’t miss a trick;
Notice each flip, each flick,
each little ripple...
His next nibble
lurks below.
Watch him
go.
