Prologue
Introduction

Regarding Creative Endeavors

Life is a washout when it has no passion--
and what is passion but the intensity
of one's drive to elevate something
to a high level of perceived value.

For the artist, passion reveals itself
through the strokes of a brush applying
shades of yellow and red to desert sunsets,
or to lava spewing out of an island volcano.

For the composer, it is detected in a piece's
despondent downfall, building crescendo,
and satisfying summation.

For the poet, it is manifested in written lines
sharing the universal essence of a person's
heart and soul.

We witness passion developed from ideas,
acts, things, settings, circumstances, teachings
and other people. It is the fuel encouraging
humans to follow their dreams.

Author Notes A book with free verse, rhymed lines, monostitches, small stone writing, modern and traditional haiku, haiga, modern and traditional tanka, and tanka art.

Each page is independent, but contributes to the overall concept.

Blessings for My Friend

In this, your pressing time of stress, I pray
your nightly dreams become more pleasant things--
like all the trilling notes a small bird sings,
uplifting listeners throughout the day.

May your thoughts rest upon the gentle sway

of long branched willows nourished by cool springs
that gurgle down a mountainside through strings
of waiting fields adorned with golden hay.

My wish for you is to observe and feel
the full delight of captivating stars
spread out across our nighttime canopy.
Imaginings like these will help you heal
the same as soothing, softly played, guitars
enriching souls to prompt recovery.

Author Notes What is a Great Work?

The applicable definition here concerns
a creative effort by an artist or writer that,
if encountered, would touch others deeply
on emotional or intellectual levels...or both.

On a personal level, this is based on the
striking work of some people I have
known who were too embarrassed to display it.
I have no idea why.

Back in the late 1990s, I took a class
in Play writing and submitted a one act play
for the final. I received an A and wonderful
comments from the instructor. Alas, during
one of my many moves it was lost and I
have never had the heart to rewrite it.
