"Poetry From The Heart"

Prologue
Shooting Stars

By RodG

Apaches claim their ancestors
all dance across the onyx sky
then rush to hide where Sun has gone,
a desert world dark, cold, and dry.

The Greeks envision angry sparks
as Hephaestus wields his hefty hammer
to fashion weapons for the gods
or create Achilles' golden armor.

To me they're like the lightning bugs
that flicker on then off in flight
their incandescence much too brief
yet comfort for the soul at night.

These shooting stars flit by and fade
before a man can contemplate.
They symbolize that lives are streaks.
Act now and don't procrastinate.

Author Notes Please try to imagine a midnight sky full of shooting stars. Such meteor showers are common in the summer months.
Apaches are a warlike Native American tribe that lived in the American southwest.
Hephaestus is the Olympian god of metal. He was an artisan who worked with all metals at a forge on Mount Olympus, creating jewelry and armor for the other gods and heroes.
Achilles was the great Greek hero (see The Iliad) who fought at Troy and was mortally wounded in his heel.

Chapter 8
Bard of Avon

By RodG

BARD OF AVON
Born on the banks of Avon, O! great Bard,
You were the Chosen One, by God assigned
With a celestial muse keeping your guard,
To delve into the depths of human mind.

From there you spun a tapestry so rich
With every sweep of vibrant human life
Lovers thwarted by hate's loudest pitch
Ambitious kings, naive men and scheming wife.

Wise women,coy virgins,conscience that claws
Men of all calling and courtiers who fawn
Timeless tales of men with fatal flaws
You told them too well,O!Bard of Avon.

Over the ages,in awe ever more
A Colossus astride centuries four.

Author Notes 450th birth anniversary of Shakespeare falls today.many of the most common expressions in our daily use come from his works, though we may not realise it.(More sinned against than sinned', 'salad days','tongue tied','hoodwinked','in a pickle','long and short of it' etc etc..the list is endless) This is my humble tribute to this literary giant.

Chapter 12
To Bloom Again

By RodG

I held a seed, the other day
A tiny seed... hard, dormant, dry
I gazed at it and heard it say
To bloom again, we all must die

Deep, inner wisdom, in it lay
Designed by some great Force on high
A knowledge of perfection's way
To bloom again, we all must die

These simple words will with me stay
Their truthfulness I can't deny
Soft lights and shadows romp and play
To bloom again, we all must die

Author Notes The sponsor of this contest chose a great work of art to accompany the poems in this contest. Thank you, Moonwillow, for letting us use it.
A Kyrielle poem may contain any number of 4 line stanzas but each line must have 8 syllables in it. As well, one line from the first stanza must be repeated in every stanza. This repeated line is usually the last line of the first stanza (as in my poem) but an optional line from the first stanza may be used. The rhyme scheme is abab, abaB, abaB (with the upper case B's representing the repeated line).
