Lunar Sorcery

The topic for this poetry contest is: Write an English Sonnet about the Moon, lunar sorcery, how the Moon affects you.

We are all attracted by mystic power of the Moon. Now, here is your chance to put it into an English sonnet form.

A Sonnet is a poem consisting of 14 lines (iambic pentameter) with a particular rhyming scheme:

Examples of a rhyming scheme:

#1) abab cdcd efef gg
#2) abba cddc effe gg
#3) abba abba cdcd cd

A Shakespearean (English) sonnet has three quatrains and a couplet, and rhymes abab cdcd efef gg.

Iambic Pentameter is a type of meter with an unstressed syllable followed by the stressed. That rhythm is measured in small groups of syllables; these small groups of syllables are called 'feet'. The word 'iambic' describes the type of foot that is used. The word 'pentameter' indicates that a line has five of these 'feet'. Shakespeare is famous for this method of writing in his plays.

Iambic pentameter', then, is a line made up of five pairs of short/long, or unstressed/stressed, syllables. de-DUM, de-DUM, de-DUM, de-DUM, de-DUM.

Here is the example of my own lunar sonnet:

I put the silver moon to task tonight
to share its wisdom and illuminate
To end my doubts with its insightful light
and help me rid my soul of heavy weight.

~*~

The passions boiling in this soul of fire
Kaleidoscope of stones of every hue
Citrines for jealousy, topaz ~ desire
Devotion, love are diamonds clear and true.

~*~

Each stone has its own karma and its fate
When come in conflict, they're volcano's rage
Please help me, moon, before I reach the Gate
Replete my soul with peace and sacred sage.

~*~

The Moon beheld me with its azure eyes
I felt its silver pouring from the skies.
