Palindrome Poetry
Poetry Contest
Write a Palindrome Poem. A Palindrome's lines read the same way whether they are read backward or forward. For example, "madam" is a palindrome word. Also, from lines 2 and 16 from the example poem provided below: "creates life" (line 2) vis-á-vis "life creates" (line 16).
For the purposes of this contest, the requirements for writing in this poetic form are provided as follows:
The poem must consist of three distinct parts as follows:
1) The first half of the poem
2) The pivot. The pivot is the center word, or short phrase in the poem and serves as reversal point. This is perhaps the most critical part of the poem as it must connect both halves of the poem in a sensible, meaningful way. (See line 9 in the example poem provided below where the word "become" serves as the pivot and reversal point.)
3) The second half of the poem which is really the first part written in reverse. In other words, line 1 becomes the last line, line 2 becomes the next to the last line in a reversed form; line 3 becomes the third to the last line in a reverse form, etc. (See example poem provided below.)
4) The poem need not be written in a metrical pattern.
5) The poem may be about any subject and be any length. With that said, contest rules do not permit the writing of multiple Palindrome poems. Poets must limit their entries to just one poem.
