I've recently returned to FanStory after being away a number of years, and was drawn to this story as I searched the all time best stories. I can certainly understand why this story received that recognition. It is excellently written and flows with intense suspense. You are a great writer!

I have just read Night Guilt.

I found your writing to be intriguing - the kind that conjures up mind pictures, leading the reader on with dawning understanding of what has happened. One great description I liked was "The devil's dentist"

I noticed you repeated the phrase "Much passed between them". Once with frank, and once with Dugan,I realize you might have done it consciously to tie the two relationships together?

a very well written story.

Wow... Wow... This is my first 6 star rating. Brilliant, seamlessly complex. These characters will stick with me for a long time. I'm so impressed with their depth. I can see why this won a contest.

That was a very sad, beautifully crafted piece of work.

It raised old and very bitter old memories that I had long since hardened into callous non-existence.

I won't be thanking you for waking them up at three am in the morning right enough but I do thank you for a really nice short story.

Congratulations in winning the contest. This is a very absorbing and very pathetic story because it could happen in real life, over and over.

Great story about the measures a mother will take to care for her child, especially around an abusive husband. You did a great job describing Frank. Very much about him revealed in so few words. Congratulations on winning the contest.

Hey, wanted to add my congrats for the contest, and also to compliment you on a fine piece of writing. Looked up your bio, was interesting learn you put some years in a profession I served for 22 years as a C/O in California. Now as a counselor you probably have a stiff case load and you get to listen all of the sniveling. To your credit, working in a prison surrounded by the depths of society changed you no doubt, but did not make you bitter or disillusioned. Will read some of your other efforts.

Wow!!I just finished reading your piece and it was awesome. I was so taken in by it that I found myself leaning in toward my computer screen as I read. My favorite part was when Dugan, hears the pitter patter of the little steps that started off the story. It brought the story around full circle. Wonderful! Congrats on your win!

lancellot, this story is most excellently written, but it is a horrible story. You must have dug into the very depths of your soul to imagine a grown man beating a child to death.
The fact that the mother stood by him and only shot him dead when she was overcome by laughter from his lack of manhood seems unbelievable. Don't get me wrong, I know these things happen, but the mother having allowed that beast to get away with his horrible crime, then having the love of the sheriff to soothe her ans still keep her secret makes me feel like, other than of course losing her daughter in such a horrible way, she should have turned him in at once. Some women have no respect for themselves or for their child(ren) and it makes me mad.
Your story is so well done you deserve to win the contest, but I can never forget the mother who was guilty by omission. (I know this was fiction, but it hit me hard).
Congratulations, Joan
