Wow. There is no way to read that without a box of tissues handy. I don't know what the movie was, but you did an exceptional job of retelling it through this short story. The Germans weren't known for taking prisoners. That was a war that no one will ever forget. Thanks so much for sharing and good luck in this contest. God Bless.

Thank you Linda, The movie is called Miracle in Santa Anna - still on DVD. I wrote it my way, changed the characters and places. Some good things did come out of the holocaust. Blessings, Kay.

Hullo Aussie,

This makes for very good and interesting reading and although it is not an original story as such, your presentation is good and well-written.
There is nothing to suggest changing and I thank you for sharing this with us.
Love from .... Nanette Mary.

This is an amazing story, Aussie. Your details, the little nuances that bring the characters to life make this an extra special entry for the contest. Good luck - it's a great read.

Warmest regards, Bev

Aussie you have written a wonderful story about the Italian campaign driving the Germans out of Italy. Italians give sanctuary to US soldiers and the Americans help save many of the villagers. In the process the American officer and a village girl fall in love consummating their happiness. Years later they find each other again to fulfill their life together. It must have been a wonderful movie for you to remember it so accurately. Your story is written very well - easy read. What was its name. Regards Alan

Wow!!! Kate! This was fantastic. You always write poetry depicting some historical event or some type of event from Australia. Youvevfonevs marvelous job here with your story. Being of Italian decenti could easily visualize your story. Great piece of writing.... John

P.S... Here in the states, we sell Proscuitto, an Italian cured ham. It'sa expensive, but tasty and comes from Parma Italy. As does Parmigiano Reggiano, an expensive Parmesan cheese...

Bon Giorno my friend Giuseppe! So pleased you liked it; had to change the names and places (thinking of you, knowing you would pick the geography up.) The real movie is called Miracle at Santa Anna and still available on DVD. Blessings my cheese-eating friend (love parmesan) Hugs, Kay XXX

You've bitten off a big piece, here Aussie. The story is a synopsis of a novel (or a movie, as you say). If you were to take a small segment of this - the betrayal and execution, for example - and explore it in detail from the POV of either of the participants you'd have a tighter story and would be able to let the reader experience the emotions instead of you having to tell us about them.

That said, this is technically well written. One thing to look at:

Giorgio and Mario were village partisans that were waiting to sight the Germans. - who

An impressive undertaking. :) Nancy

Nancy, Thank you so much, your review means a lot to me; don't write stories but the film Miracle at Santa Anna got my attention. I understand about taking one segment and describe it in detail. One reader wanted me to write part 2! Blessings fellow-cave dweller :-} XX

Montefiorino; nestled - I would change that to a comma
south of M; because of - I would drop that semicolon
Papa G was the village elder, and - I added the comma
shouted at us, "I am - I added the comma
We shouted back, "Americans - add comma
face was immediate, and - add comma
"I speak some," Maria smiled - change comma to a period - smiled is not a speech tag
No one could resist the gentle giant, and - add comma
gone by himself last time, and - add comma
Are you married, Maria - add comma for direct address
all the villagers were shot, - change comma to period
Radio's broke, Sarge - add comma for direct address
The next man down was Papa, and - add comma
When the convoy reached the hospital, - add comma
My adoptive parents are wealthy. - add period
Happy birthday, Gina - add comma
I very much like the story and the characters. Good plot development and dialogue. Great ending. Brooke :-)

This story is is well written and held readers interest and attention to the finish.

There are so many atrocities committed during war. throughout history it has been the same. There are always parties to war that are fanatical or greedy or even insane.

Appreciate your writing!

Hi K,

You have written an interesting and compelling story for the contest. Your verbiage is well chosen, you developed your characters well and made them seem real in my mind. That awful war took many lives and maimed many others. I love the uplifting ending and am glad John and Maria found each other again. Well done and good luck in the contest....blessings, chey
