I'm hooked. This section definitely makes a person want to know more about what happens to these characters. There was one phrase I didn't understand: "...get my arm in the back to clean it."
Good work!

The counter had a cubby hole where the post mistress tucked things away. Lester was offering to reach in there and clean it, but his aunt knew he'd find what she's been hiding. Thank you for this. Gretchen

Reading this wonderful post, I am firmly convinced that there is no more magical a time than a childhood filled with the mischief of a child free to imagine and create a world of freedom, laughter and the pure joy of just living life to the fullest.

I like the idea/imagery of God painting the dawn sky every morning. But of course dislike that HE'd pick a Saturday to rain on.
Good imagery, which puts me right into the scene, and I sense everything around.
Gee, I wonder why Artie is hiding. Good suspense. Nice story.

This work has reached the exceptional level

I love the nature's imagery...it's so beautiful..

And Beautiful personification of the sun too.

I love this..
"The sky is purple, like the darkest bloom of the iris. Gold is threading its way up from the horizon."

"God was an artist. He painted the sky every morning. Each time it was a little different."

The conversation between Heddy and Lester is really cute.

Well done!

Hi Gretchen, I haven't really followed this story and I'm now sorry that I haven't. I will try to remedy that. All I can say at this stage that it's very well written. Ulla:)))

Ahh, the romance begins between Heddy and Lester. The letter for Artie is an added mystery. Your story depths are constantly engaging, and I can't wait for the reveal of the letter. I can't guess what it says, but you know I'm over here trying to. Lol

With the music blaring it is a wonder Heddy can hear the softer sounds of the ocean at all.

"The sun isn't awake either" illustrates how early Heddy gets out of bed.

"bull frogs" should be bullfrogs and "bull frog" should be bullfrog.

Seems Heddy may just have feelings for Lester.

This is a lovely chapter, as Lester and Heddy are on the cusp of growing up. Lester is starting to realise the value of friendship in a love relationship, and that it is actually important not to have to act all the time. Nonni remans her warm, loving comforting self. Now, what is in that letter? It could be, in fact, must be significant.

This is such a lovely night and then day that Heddy is feeling very happy. She still doesn't believe Artie is a bad guy and is quick to insist they take a letter Lester has found hidden at the post office to the German man. The thought of a kiss has Heddy thinking unexpected thoughts. This seems so like children when they come to a crossroad in their lives.

Some sound advice from Nonni considering the value of rain and the opportunity for God to use His considerable artistic skills. Then she goes to the beach, and Lester turns up with a letter he says belongs to a German that escape the island because of poor treatment, they go to meet Heddy's German friend and ask him. Beautifully written, blessings Roy
